Tulum Travel Guide

TULUM

A very trendy town that has some serious Mexican roots. Don’t be that person who visits a foreign country and doesn’t experience the culture! Here is my guide to get the best out of your time, without having to scroll through instagram influencer selfies. :)

First — please know I am a Google Maps crazy person. Every city I have ever visited is filled with my marks: https://goo.gl/maps/Y3Ads7suaZkBZxkM8. This is my go-to guide, most have been tested, some are recs.

I have stayed at Habitas, Mi Amor, at an Airbnb and at Casa Pueblo. All fantastic in their own ways but I would stay at Casa Pueblo (the in town location) again and again (note — it is a little noisy compared to the beach). I photographed a wedding at Nest, which was also killer.

Ruins are in fact, worth it. So beautiful and so much history. Go at the crack of dawn.

Check out a lesser known cenotes (pronounced seh-no-tays). Ask any of the local folks working where you are staying. They will connect you with a reputable taxi driver. Apparently the best cenotes are really hard to find.. but if you guys are the adventurous types, drive there yourselves! Remember to go early otherwise there will be a lot of people. Some are just 5 mins outside Tulum town.
SUNRISES are where it's at since they come up over the horizon! Don't miss this!Check out this public beach for a day and bring a picnic: Las Palmas Public Beach. It is SO AUTHENTIC. Lots of different cultures represented. Bars where you can bring a cold beer right to your towel. You will barely hear English which is amazing. We spent most of our days here after a 5 minute walk from our hotel.

Spend a morning or late afternoon in Tulum city (or the whole trip like we recently did). The vibe is way more Mexican, unlike Tulum Beach. There is an amazing coffee bar that has big Helvetica lettering that says ART & COFFEE (though it is now another location of Raw Love). Best coffee in the city. I recommend getting bikes and doing the entire beach road and then taking the sidewalk to Tulum town.

If you are a health nut like me — go to every Raw Love location. Also, Del Cielo. The best health food I ate on both trips.Best Mexican tacos — Taqueria Honorio (closes at noon) and Antojitos La Chiapaneca.

Sip on mezcal straight with salt and fresh lime wedges.Great meals are to be found at Verdant, Kitchen Table, and Mamasan.Kinda random — but Burrito Amor is tex-mex in Mexico. REALLY GOOD gluten free coco flour tortillas. And fresh goodness.Best expensive meal — ARCA. The food is amazinggggg. The prawn appetizer was nuts. IN fact, I think everything from there is nuts. Never made it to Hartwood though that is the most instagrammed place ;). Can you tell I am bitter? Haha.Italdo and Cara Feliz  for pastries and good coffee.Campanella Cremerie for the best ice cream.SVER IK — amazing art installation.

Enjoy your trip!
